I tell them that the formal requirements of the publishers are insurmountable (APA or Oxford style) and have to be followed exactly. I also strive to present your writing in the clearest and most coherent style as possible. The academic who publishes a paper is joining a conversation; a conversation assumes there are a speaker and a listener. The academic writer wants the listener to be engaged, to connect to their readers and the readers to actually read and absorb the information. The use of confusing or complex language is not conducive to achieving that goal. Keep it clear and coherent. Speak from your heart directly to your reader. Otherwise, you risk subverting the whole purpose which is to communicate new ideas to an audience effectively and persuasively.
